Egilsstaðir is the largest town in East Iceland and the region’s transport and service hub, set on the banks of the long Lagarfljót lake — home, legend says, to a serpentine monster like Scotland’s Nessie.
On the lake’s far shore lies Hallormsstaður, Iceland’s largest forest, and a short drive leads to the tiered Hengifoss waterfall and the geothermal Vök Baths. With its own airport, Egilsstaðir is the easiest springboard for exploring the Eastfjords.
