A little-known but powerful waterfall in the Þórufoss gorge near Þingvellir, surprisingly close to Reykjavík and yet almost entirely off the tourist trail.

Þórufoss is a forceful waterfall on the Laxá river in Kjós, roughly 40 kilometres from Reykjavík, dropping about 24 metres over a layered basalt ledge into a deep pool. Despite its proximity to the capital and its considerable visual appeal, it sees very few visitors compared to the more famous Golden Circle waterfalls.

The site feels genuinely wild — the river cuts through open moorland with no facilities or crowds, and the thunderous sound of the falls carries well before you reach the edge. Arctic char and salmon are present in the river, and the area has a reputation for good bird-watching along the banks.

Access is via a rough track off Route 48 near Kjós. A short walk leads to the rim viewpoint. Normal cars can reach the car park in dry conditions; after rain the track can get muddy. Best visited April to October.
