Reykjavík --Landmannalaugar
Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Reykjavík, followed by a scenic 3–4 hour drive to Landmannalaugar. Along the way, you’ll take in sweeping views of the South Coast before entering the rugged Highlands, passing by the infamous Hekla volcano.

The Laugavegur Trail starts in the vibrant geothermal region of Landmannalaugar. Before jumping into the full trek, you’ll spend the first day on a warm-up hike to get your legs moving and ready for the days ahead. This scenic loop winds through some of the area’s most unforgettable terrain, including the surreal Laugahraun lava field, the colorful Grænagil gorge, and the impressive Bláhnjúkur volcano. It’s the ideal way to settle into the rhythm of the trail while taking in the raw beauty of the landscape.

Landmannalaugar,- Álftavatn
We’ll kick off the day by crossing the Laugahraun lava field, surrounded by rugged terrain and lava formations. Along the way, you’ll pass the vividly colored slopes of Brennisteinsalda, then continue toward the steaming rhyolite mountains of Reykjafjöll. The path climbs through narrow gorges, winds past the hot springs of Stórihver, and follows bold yellow ridgelines. The scenery soon shifts dramatically as you enter the dark, glistening expanse of the Hrafntinnusker obsidian desert. Here, we’ll take a well-earned break and enjoy lunch in this striking and remote landscape.

Vanuit Hrafntinnusker dalen we af in de geulen van Jökultungur, een geothermisch wonderland gevuld met stomende warmwaterbronnen en borrelende modderpoelen. Na verloop van tijd heeft geothermische activiteit deze geulen geschilderd in levendige tinten geel en rood, die prachtig contrasteren met de bleke zandtinten eromheen. Op de top van Jökultungur zullen we adembenemende uitzichten maken op de Fjallabak-regio en, als het weer het toelaat, glimpen vangen van de Mýrdalsjökull-, Eyjafjallajökull- en Tindfjallajökull-gletsjers.

To reach our campsite near Álftavatn lake, we’ll wade across a river—a thrilling yet safe experience. The day concludes with a hearty dinner and a chance to relax, soaking in the tranquil beauty of the lake and its serene surroundings.

Álftavatn ámstrur
Na een stevig ontbijt gaan we weer op pad voor een spannende dag trekking, De reis begint met een beekje oversteken, nu een bekend en leuk onderdeel van het avontuur, voordat we de uitgestrekte zwarte zandwoestijn van Mælifellssandur in gaan Onderweg passeren we de opvallende vulkanen van Stórasúla en Hattafell, hun met groen mos bedekte hellingen die prachtig afsteken tegen het donkere, rotsachtige landschap.

Als het weer helder is, worden we getrakteerd op ongelooflijke uitzichten op de Eyjafjallajökull- en Mýrdalsjökull-gletsjers. Deze iconische vulkaangletsjers zijn doordrenkt van de beroemde verstoorde vliegreizen in 2010 met zijn krachtige uitbarsting, en Mýrdalsjökull verbergt de onvoorspelbare Katla-vulkaan onder zijn ijs.

As we continue, the dramatic Markarfljótsgljúfur canyon comes into view. This stunning 200 (656 ft) deep gorge, carved by a glacial river, is a real highlight of the day. We’ll eventually reach Botnar, a green oasis nestled in the middle of the black desert, where we’ll spend the night. After a delicious dinner, you can relax and enjoy the tranquil scenery in the soft evening light.

Emstrur – Thorsmork – Reykjavik
On day 4, we set out on the final stretch of the Laugavegur Trail, leaving the dramatic landscapes of Emstrur behind as we make our way toward Þórsmörk. The trail leads us through the scenic Almenningar gorge, with the striking silhouette of Mount Einhyrningur (Unicorn Mountain) rising against the sky. Along the way, we’re treated to stunning glacier views of Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull.

Meals include generous portions of milk products, eggs, fish, nuts, meat, and bread. Refreshments are provided between meals, but we recommend participants bring their own snacks, such as protein bars, if they feel additional sustenance might be needed during the tour.
If you have special dietary restrictions/requirements, please purchase the Special Food extra and inform us of your dietary needs so we can accommodate you. Booking these in advance ensures the best meal experience for all, so please kindly inform us of any dietary requirements.
Meals are a group effort prepared by participants, guides, and the team—a fun way to make food and friends! Guides typically lead the process, but everyone contributes.

Accommodatie

Campsites are located next to the mountain huts. By default, customers are assigned a two-person tent at booking. Participants can opt for a single tent for privacy; otherwise, tents are shared with a same-gender participant.

Gear

Conditions can change quickly and often it gets cold and wet in the highlands. It can snow in any month of the year! As we will be spending all of our time either outside or in a tent, it is necessary to bring good gear along. If you’re unsure about your gear, we offer rentals for trekking tours, including waterproof jackets, pants, hiking boots, poles, and sleeping bags.
It is necessary to have closed-toe shoes for the river crossings, as the current can be strong. We recommend old sneakers or water shoes.
Your main luggage, sleeping bag and mat are transported between campsites by a support vehicle. Please pack light in a waterproof duffel bag (70-80 L) to protect your belongings during river crossings. Each person is allowed one bag. For the daily trekking, you'll only need to carry a daypack (25-40 L) with essentials like lunch, water, rain gear, and river shoes.

Faciliteiten

Bathrooms are available at al huts and campsites. Shower use costs 1100 ISK, and tokens can be purchased with cash or card at the warden's huts. Bathrooms include toilet paper and hand soap. Bring your own toiletries such as shampoo, towels, and washcloths.
Electricity at the huts/campsites is limited and power outlets are restricted. A portable powerbank is highly recommended for keeping devices powered throughout the trek.
