Selfoss is the largest town in South Iceland, straddling the Ölfusá river where the Ring Road crosses it, and the commercial hub for the whole southern lowlands. It has grown quickly, and recently gained a striking new old-town square rebuilt in historic Icelandic styles.
It’s a natural service stop and base for the region, with riverside walks, a growing dining scene and the Bobby Fischer Center honouring the chess legend buried nearby. The Golden Circle, Kerið crater and the South Coast are all within easy reach.
