A harbour town beyond the Hvalfjörður tunnel with a landmark lighthouse and long beach.

Akranes sits on a spit of land across the bay from Reykjavík, reached in under an hour via the Hvalfjörður tunnel. A proud fishing and industrial town, it’s also known for its football club and its long sandy beach.

The twin Akranes lighthouses at Breiðin — one of which you can climb — are the landmark, and the Guðlaug geothermal baths built into the seawall at Langisandur beach are a local favourite. The Museum Centre tells the town’s maritime story.
