A striking and underrated waterfall near Kirkjubæjarklaustur, plunging freely from a high basalt cliff with almost no crowds to speak of.

Stjórnarfoss is a free-leaping waterfall near the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur in South Iceland, launching off a tall basalt cliff in a long, wind-swept plunge. The falls are considerably less famous than their neighbours on the South Coast, which means you will often have this dramatic scene entirely to yourself.

The high, sheer cliff face and the wide grassy meadow below create a theatrical setting, particularly when afternoon light catches the spray. The surrounding farmland and the distant profile of the Vatnajökull glacier provide a quietly beautiful backdrop.

The site is easily found off the Ring Road near Kirkjubæjarklaustur — a short gravel track leads to a small parking area, and the falls are a five-minute walk from the car. Best combined with nearby Systrafoss and a stop at the Kirkjufoss and Kirkjugólf columnar basalt pavement in the village itself.
