Fjadrargljufur

Fjaðrárgljúfur is a remarkable canyon stretching roughly 2 km in length and dropping up to 100 metres, carved into the basalt and palagonite tuff of the South Iceland lowlands by glacial meltwater floods over millions of years. The Fjaðrá river still winds through the gorge floor in elegant S-curves that look almost unreal when viewed from the rim — the combination of the rust-and-green canyon walls, the clear river below, and the surrounding flat lava plain makes this one of the most visually distinctive natural features in Iceland.

A well-maintained trail runs along the canyon rim for approximately 1.5 km, providing a series of overlook viewpoints from which the full drama of the gorge unfolds progressively. The canyon walls are thick with moss, ferns, and in summer, abundant wildflowers. The trail is undemanding but some sections are narrow and close to the edge, so care is needed. Photography here is exceptional at almost any time of day, but golden-hour light particularly enhances the textures of the canyon walls.

Fjaðrárgljúfur is located about 6 km from Kirkjubæjarklaustur on Route F206 (passable in dry summer conditions by most vehicles), roughly 270 km from Reykjavík on the Ring Road. The site gained enormous popularity after a music video was filmed here in 2015, and visitor management measures including designated paths and a car park are now in place. Free to visit; open year-round, though road conditions limit winter access.
