A state-of-the-art interactive volcano museum in Hvolsvöllur uses live seismic data and immersive exhibits to bring Iceland's fiery geological story to life.

The Lava Centre (Lavamiðstöðin) is Iceland’s most technologically sophisticated volcano and earthquake museum, opened in 2017 in Hvolsvöllur at the heart of one of the world’s most volcanically active regions. Its dramatic architecture alone — a jagged lava-black building rising from the flat farmland — signals that this is no ordinary museum.

Inside, real-time feeds from Iceland’s seismic and GPS monitoring networks are woven into immersive exhibits covering volcanic systems, eruption mechanics, glacial floods, and the Katla and Eyjafjallajökull volcanoes visible from the door. An eruption simulation room lets visitors experience the heat and sound of an active lava flow at safe scale.

The Lava Centre is open year-round on Route 1 in Hvolsvöllur. It includes a café and gift shop. Allow ninety minutes to two hours for a thorough visit, and note that this is one of the best rainy-day options on the South Coast.
