A strikingly symmetrical 60 m cinder cone crater on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, reached by a pleasant hike through ancient lava fields and birch scrub.

Eldborg is one of Iceland’s most elegantly formed volcanic craters — a near-perfect circular cinder cone rising 60 m above the Hnappadalur valley on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The crater formed roughly 5000–8000 years ago and its well-preserved rim and deep bowl make it a textbook example of a scoria crater.

The hike to the crater rim is approximately 4 km return from the car park near Snorrastaðir farm, taking around 2 hours at a leisurely pace across lava fields colonised by birch scrub and heather. The crater rim itself gives great views over the Snæfellsnes landscape toward the distant Snæfellsjökull glacier and down into the perfectly formed bowl.

Eldborg is reached via Route 54 on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, approximately 110 km from Reykjavík. The trailhead parking is near Snorrastaðir; a fee may apply for using the farm car park. The trail is well-marked and accessible for most fitness levels. A great stop when exploring the Snæfellsnes Peninsula year-round.
