A thunderous, little-visited waterfall on the Hvítá river upstream of Gullfoss, surrounded by a raw lava-field landscape and almost no tourists.

Dynkur is an imposing waterfall on the Hvítá river in the Highlands south of Kerlingarfjöll, upstream from the famous Gullfoss. The falls are wide and forceful, dropping through a jagged lava canyon with the characteristic thunderous roar that gives the site its name — “Dynkur” means “the thunderer.”

Despite lying not far from one of Iceland’s most visited landmarks, Dynkur is virtually unknown to tourists. The lack of crowds and the rugged, untouched character of the surrounding lava field make it a favourite with those who seek out lesser-known Iceland. The views back toward the Highlands glaciers from this area are outstanding.

Access requires a 4×4 via the F-roads of the central Highlands (F35 or F337 approach). The site is summer-only, typically accessible July to September. No facilities; come self-sufficient with food, water, and fuel.
