A solitary inland promontory rising from the vast black sand plain of Mýrdalssandur near Vík, sheltering a photogenic basalt sea cave whose worn profile bears a striking resemblance to Yoda from Star Wars.

Hjörleifshöfði is an isolated, flat-topped volcanic headland that rises abruptly from the enormous black sand outwash plain of Mýrdalssandur between Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur on Iceland’s South Coast. Once an island surrounded by sea, it was stranded inland by centuries of glacial sediment deposits and now stands alone on the vast dark plain like a natural fortress. It is named after Hjörleifur Hróðmarsson, the foster-brother of Iceland’s first settler Ingólfur Arnarson, who was killed here by his Irish slaves in the 9th century — making this one of the earliest recorded sites of human habitation in Iceland.

At the western base of the headland, erosion has carved a shallow basalt cave whose dark interior walls and eroded entrance arch have, over time, formed a silhouette that many visitors immediately recognise as resembling Yoda — the Star Wars character — complete with large ears, deep-set features, and a wizened expression. The cave has become a popular stop for visitors travelling the Ring Road, and the resemblance is genuinely striking from the right angle. A short walk around the headland base also provides views across the black sand desert and back toward Vík and Reynisfjara.

Hjörleifshöfði is located off the Ring Road about 10 km east of Vík. A rough gravel track leads to the base of the headland, passable by most vehicles in dry conditions. The site is free to visit, open year-round, and combines well with Vík and Reynisfjara on a South Coast itinerary.
