A compact volcanic crater on Snæfellsnes with a metal staircase to the rim, giving easy access to sweeping views of ancient lava fields and the Snæfellsjökull glacier.

Saxhóll is a small but rewarding volcanic crater on the northern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, located within Snæfellsjökull National Park. A metal staircase installed along the steep outer slope makes the ascent to the 50 m rim straightforward and takes only about 5–10 minutes, making this one of Iceland’s most accessible crater viewpoints.

From the top, the views across the Neshraun lava field — a vast expanse of rugged lava stretching down to the sea — and towards the Snæfellsjökull glacier cap are outstanding. The crater bowl itself is well-preserved and the lava textures visible from the rim are fascinating for geology enthusiasts.

Saxhóll is located on Route 574, the road that circles around Snæfellsnes to the tip of the peninsula, within easy reach of the Vatnshellir Cave visitor centre. Accessible by regular car year-round. Very suitable for families and visitors of limited mobility (the staircase removes the need for any scrambling). Takes under 30 minutes including the climb.
