Akranes's long Blue Flag beach offers golden sands, calm surf, and sweeping views of Snæfellsjökull glacier across the bay — a favourite of families and joggers.

Langisandur stretches along the western side of the Akranes peninsula, just a 45-minute drive north of Reykjavík via the Hvalfjörður tunnel. It is one of only three Blue Flag beaches in Iceland, recognised for its water quality, safety facilities, and environmental management.

The beach is a broad arc of light-coloured sand with calm enough conditions for children to paddle safely in summer, a rarity in Iceland. Views across Faxaflói bay to the ice cap of Snæfellsjökull are spectacular on clear days, and a geothermal hot-pot at the beach’s edge provides a warm reward after a bracing walk.

Parking and public toilets are available at the beach access. The nearby Akranes lighthouse and the town centre’s café scene make this an easy half-day trip from the capital.
