A naturally formed ice cave inside Mýrdalsjökull glacier, its jet-black volcanic ash layers creating a unique and otherworldly ice tunnel.

The Katla Ice Cave is a naturally occurring ice cave within Mýrdalsjökull glacier, formed where glacial meltwater has carved a tunnel through the ice. What makes it uniquely dramatic is the layers of volcanic ash from Katla’s past eruptions embedded in the glacier walls — bands of black running through the blue-white ice create a striking visual unlike any other ice cave in Iceland.

Unlike the blue ice caves of Vatnajökull (which are strictly winter-only), the Katla Ice Cave is accessible year-round, making it one of the few glacier cave experiences available in the summer months. The black volcanic walls and ceiling give it an almost industrial, alien quality that contrasts sharply with the ethereal blue caves elsewhere.

Tours depart from Vík and are run exclusively by certified glacier guides — this is a mandatory requirement, not just a recommendation, as conditions inside glacial caves can change rapidly. Booking ahead is strongly advised, especially in summer. The cave itself is approximately a 20-minute drive from Vík followed by a guided walk.
