A small, convenient South Iceland service town on the banks of the Ytri-Rangá river, widely used as a base for exploring Hekla volcano, Þórsmörk, and the attractions of the interior.

Hella is a service town of roughly 800 residents situated on the Ring Road in South Iceland, about 100 km east of Reykjavík on the flat agricultural plains that extend toward the highlands. It sits on the eastern bank of the Ytri-Rangá river — one of Iceland’s finest salmon rivers — and has a compact centre with hotels, guesthouses, a supermarket, petrol station, and restaurants that make it a practical overnight stop for travellers exploring the South Coast and interior.

Hella’s primary appeal is as a base rather than a destination in its own right. Hekla volcano is only about 30 km to the north, Þórsmörk and Fimmvörðuháls trail are accessible by 4×4 to the east, and the South Coast waterfall route (Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi, Skógafoss) begins about 30 km further east. The Ytri-Rangá salmon season brings fly-fishing enthusiasts to the area from June through September.

The town hosts the AK Extreme sporting event venue and is home to a small but pleasant local swimming pool. It is accessible year-round on the fully paved Ring Road and is a comfortable 75-minute drive from Reykjavík, making it feasible for those who prefer not to rush the South Coast in a single day.
