A well-preserved 3400-year-old lava crater in West Iceland with a boardwalk trail to the rim offering wide views over the Norðurá river valley.

Grábrók is a textbook-perfect scoria crater sitting beside the Ring Road in West Iceland, formed in an eruption roughly 3400 years ago. A boardwalk trail spirals up to the crater rim in about 20 minutes, making it one of Iceland’s most accessible volcanic crater hikes — suitable for families with children and visitors of all fitness levels.

From the rim you look down into the shallow bowl of the crater and out over a sweeping landscape of lava fields, birch woodland, and the Norðurá river valley. Two smaller craters, Grábrókarlítill and Rauðakúla, sit nearby, and the surrounding lava field of Grábrókarhraun is fascinating to explore on foot.

Grábrók is located near Bifröst on the Ring Road (Route 1), approximately 140 km north of Reykjavík — easily combined with a trip to Snæfellsnes or the West. The car park and basic facilities are at the site. Access is free and year-round; the boardwalk makes it manageable in most weather conditions.
