Summer for hiking, kayaking and Hornstrandir; mountain roads can be difficult in winter.
Ísafjörður is the capital of the remote Westfjords, tucked on a sandy spit inside a steep-walled fjord in Iceland’s far north-west. Despite its isolation it’s a cultured little town, with a lively music scene and some of the country’s best-preserved 18th-century timber buildings.
The Westfjords Heritage Museum, sea-kayaking on the calm fjord and superb mountain hikes are the highlights, and Ísafjörður is the main gateway to the uninhabited Hornstrandir nature reserve. Roads in are magnificent in summer but demanding in winter.
