A long, milky-green glacial lake in East Iceland, legendary home of the Lagarfljótsormur serpent and fringed by Iceland's largest forest.

Lögurinn — also called Lagarfljót — is a slender 25 km-long glacial lake near Egilsstaðir in East Iceland, its waters clouded with fine glacial sediment to a distinctive milky grey-green. The lake drains the outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull and reaches a depth of 112 m, making it one of Iceland’s deepest lakes.

Lögurinn is woven into Icelandic mythology as the home of the Lagarfljótsormur, a worm-turned-serpent described in records dating to 1345 — a local cousin of the Loch Ness Monster. The shores are lined by Hallormsstaðaskógur, Iceland’s largest forest, with well-marked hiking and cycling trails through birch and spruce woodland. Nearby Hengifoss waterfall, the third tallest in Iceland, is a popular day walk from the lake shore.

The lake is easily accessible from Egilsstaðir via Route 931. Boat trips on the lake are available in summer from the Atlavík campsite and recreation area.
