The Golden Circle and South Coast are the most popular and accessible, packed with iconic sights and reachable as day trips from Reykjavík.
The interior Highlands are generally accessible only in summer (roughly late June to September) when the mountain F-roads open, and usually require a 4x4 or guided tour.
A few days covers the Golden Circle and South Coast; circling the whole island on the Ring Road takes 7–10 days for a comfortable pace.
Closer regions like the Golden Circle, South Coast and Reykjanes work well as day trips. Distant areas such as the Westfjords or East Iceland are better as multi-day trips.
Not for the main paved routes (Golden Circle, South Coast, Ring Road). The Highlands and some remote tracks do require a 4x4 — or simply join a guided tour.
