Ólafsvík is one of Iceland’s oldest trading ports, sitting beneath the ice cap of Snæfellsjökull on the peninsula’s north-west coast. It’s a down-to-earth fishing town with a dramatic mountain backdrop.
Summer brings some of Iceland’s best whale watching, including blue whales, and the town is a springboard for climbing or touring Snæfellsjökull. The slender Bæjarfoss waterfall tumbles just behind the houses, and the wild beaches of the national park are close by.
