The black sanded beach on the South Coast of Iceland

Plage de Reynisfjara is located on the South Coast of Iceland, and it is the most famous black sanded beach and very renowned worldwide. The beach is located near a volcano that has been living under the ice for many years. The black sand formed when the volcano was active, the lava floated across the beach, and then cooled down when touching the cold water, and it broke apart. The same happened with the rocky formations you see in the ocean. The lava cooled down to a specific temperature, and it created what is known as a geological feature called basalt columns.

Reynisfjara makes part of the South Coast route, and you can visit it anytime. In the summertime, the experience is calmer, and you will be able to appreciate more the cave and the basalt rocks in the ocean. In winter, it is still nice, but it can get really cold and windy.
