Mosfellsbær lies in a broad green valley on the capital’s northern edge, framed by the peaks of Esja, Helgafell and Úlfarsfell. Long a farming and dairy district, it’s now a leafy commuter town with a strong literary and outdoor identity.
Its best-known site is Gljúfrasteinn, the preserved home of Nobel-winning author Halldór Laxness. Add the historic Álafoss wool works, easy hikes up the surrounding fells and the Lágafellslaug pool, and it makes a relaxed gateway to the Golden Circle.
