Reykjavík's beloved local mountain, a broad flat-topped massif rising to 914 metres above the capital and offering accessible hiking trails with sweeping panoramic views over the city, bay, and peninsula.

Esja is the mountain that defines Reykjavík’s skyline — a long, layered basalt ridge that looms over the capital from across Kollafjörður bay, its broad summit plateau changing colour and mood with every shift of the northern light. For Reykjavík residents it is the city’s outdoor living room, and on any dry day the lower trails are busy with hikers, joggers, and families making the most of the mountain that is practically on their doorstep.

The most popular route begins at the Esjustofa visitor centre at the mountain’s base and follows a well-maintained trail through heathland and rocky terrain to a point called Þverfellshorn at approximately 780 metres, from which the views over Reykjavík, Faxaflói Bay, the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and on clear days the Snæfellsjökull glacier are extraordinary. The full summit (914 m) is a more demanding scramble and some sections require hand-over-hand climbing. Most visitors turn back at the stone marker near Þverfellshorn.

Esja is located about 10 km from central Reykjavík, easily reached by car or by public bus from the city. The Esjustofa centre has a café, toilet facilities, and trail information. Hiking is possible year-round but ice and snow make the upper sections hazardous in winter and crampons are advisable from November through March. The mountain is free to hike.
