Hljóðaklettar

Hljóðaklettar (‘Echo Rocks’) is one of the most unusual geological formations in Iceland — a cluster of ancient basalt columns shaped into spirals, rosettes, and honeycomb patterns by volcanic forces and river erosion along the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river gorge. The formations are unlike the typical straight columnar basalt found elsewhere in Iceland, with twisted and curved shapes that are geologically rare.

The name comes from the remarkable acoustic properties of the rock formations — sounds echo and reverberate strangely among the boulders and caves, creating an ethereal sonic quality. Walking the marked trail through the formation takes about 2 hours and leads past viewpoints, caves, and river overlooks within the Vesturdalur section of Jökulsárgljúfur.

Hljóðaklettar is located within Vatnajökull National Park in the Jökulsárgljúfur section, accessed from the Vesturdalur campsite/car park off Route 862 in northeast Iceland. The route is accessible by regular car in summer; the road may be partly gravel. This site is often overlooked in favour of nearby Ásbyrgi and Dettifoss, making it an excellent off-the-beaten-track choice.
