Aldeyjarfoss

Aldeyjarfoss is one of Iceland’s most photogenic yet least-visited major waterfalls, hidden in the Bárðardalur valley of North Iceland along the highland Sprengisandur route. The Skjálfandafljót river — the same river that feeds the famous Goðafoss downstream — crashes over a roughly 20-metre drop ringed by perfectly geometric basalt columns, creating a dramatic geological frame that few other falls in the country can match.

The contrast between the dark, angular lava columns and the churning white water and teal pool below makes Aldeyjarfoss a favourite of landscape photographers. A short trail leads to viewpoints on both the rim and closer to the base, offering perspectives that highlight the extraordinary symmetry of the columnar basalt. The relative difficulty of the approach means visitor numbers stay low even in peak summer.

Reaching Aldeyjarfoss requires a high-clearance vehicle; the final stretch of road (F26 or the northern approach via Route 842) is rough gravel and is only reliably passable from approximately late June through September.
