A rare golden-sand beach on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and one of Iceland's most reliable spots to watch harbour seals basking at close range.

Ytri-Tunga is a small farm beach on the southern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, unusual for its warm golden sand in a country dominated by black beaches. A colony of harbour seals hauls out here year-round, and during summer pups and adults can often be seen resting on the rocks just metres from the shore.

The seals are remarkably relaxed around quiet visitors, making this one of the best places in Iceland to observe them without the need for a boat tour. Binoculars help but are not required. The adjacent farmland is private, so visitors should keep to the shoreline path.

Ytri-Tunga lies just off Route 54 near Búðir, about 20 km west of the road 54/56 junction. There is a small car park at the access track, and the walk to the beach takes only a few minutes.
