The vivid blue-black rhyolite peak at Landmannalaugar is a challenging but rewarding hike through a rainbow-coloured volcanic landscape.

Bláhnúkur (‘Blue Peak’) is one of the most popular day hikes in the Landmannalaugar area of the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Its summit at 943 m offers a sweeping panorama of the multi-coloured rhyolite mountains, obsidian lava fields, and hot spring valleys that make this highland region unique.

The ascent is steep and loose in places — the upper section is essentially a scree scramble — but the striking colour palette of the surrounding mountains in shades of yellow, red, green, and purple makes every step worthwhile. The round trip from the Landmannalaugar car park takes roughly 3–4 hours at a moderate pace.

Landmannalaugar is accessible via the F225 and F208 highland roads, summer only (typically late June to September), with a high-clearance 4×4. Buses also run from Reykjavík in season. The Landmannalaugar hut provides basic shelter and there are camping facilities nearby.
