The largest town in the East Fjords sits at the very end of a dramatic valley, surrounded by soaring peaks that attract hikers, skiers, and photographers alike.

Neskaupstaður — sometimes called Norðfjörður after its fjord — is the biggest urban centre in the East Fjords and a surprisingly lively town with a good selection of restaurants, a cinema, and a well-equipped sports complex. Its setting is extraordinary: the town is hemmed in by mountains on three sides, giving it a secluded, end-of-the-world atmosphere that many visitors find deeply appealing.

The town is home to the Museum of Natural History and Science (Náttúrufræðistofa Austurlands), a small but well-regarded institution covering local geology, flora, and fauna. In winter, Oddsskarð ski slopes above town offer surprisingly good skiing for a location so far east.

Neskaupstaður is reached via the Norðfjarðargöng tunnel from Reyðarfjörður. The journey through the tunnel is free. The town has full amenities including supermarkets, fuel, and several accommodation options.
