Europe's largest national park by area encompasses the Vatnajökull ice cap, active volcanoes, glacier canyons, and the richest concentration of dramatic landscapes in Iceland.

Vatnajökull National Park was established in 2008 and covers roughly 14,000 km² — about 14% of Iceland’s total land area, making it the largest national park in Europe. It encompasses the entire Vatnajökull glacier (Europe’s largest ice cap by volume), several active and dormant volcanoes including Bárðarbunga and Grímsvötn, spectacular canyon systems, and dozens of individually world-class natural sites.

The park is divided into several distinct sectors each with unique character: Skaftafell in the south (glaciers, waterfalls, hiking), the highlands around Herðubreið and Askja in the north, the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon system in the northeast, and the eastern and western sectors. No single visit can cover it all — the park rewards repeated exploration and rewards those who venture off the main routes.

The main visitor centres are at Skaftafell (south), Höfn (southeast), Skriðuklaustur (east), and Ásbyrgi (north). The park has no single entrance fee — most natural sites within it are free to access, though guided activities (glacier walks, ice caves) are paid. The Ring Road passes through or adjacent to several sections. Planning ahead is essential for highland/interior routes requiring 4×4 access.
