Iceland's last turf church, built in 1884, still stands intact at Hof in Öræfi and remains an evocative symbol of centuries of rural religious life.

Hofskirkja at Hof in the Öræfi district is the last surviving turf-roofed church in Iceland, a building tradition that once defined every rural community in the country. Built in 1884, it is remarkably well preserved and still occasionally used for services, giving it a living sanctity that sets it apart from museum reconstructions.

The church is small, the interior plain, and the churchyard contains graves reaching back generations. The combination of the turf walls, the wooden steeple, and the sweeping backdrop of Vatnajökull glacier makes it one of the most quietly moving sights on the Ring Road through south-east Iceland.

Hofskirkja stands right beside Route 1 at Hof, about thirty kilometres east of Skaftafell. Access is free year-round; the church is usually unlocked in daylight hours during summer. It takes only twenty minutes to visit but lingers in the memory considerably longer.
