An 8000-year-old lava tube cave beneath the Snæfellsjökull National Park, explored by guided tours that descend through dramatic volcanic formations.

Vatnshellir is a natural lava tube cave located within Snæfellsjökull National Park on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Formed approximately 8000 years ago when the outer crust of a lava flow cooled and solidified while the molten interior drained away, the cave extends about 200 m horizontally and 35 m vertically, descending through several distinct chambers.

Guided tours last approximately 45 minutes and descend via a spiral staircase into the cave’s interior, passing through sections with striking lava stalactites, smooth tube walls, and the absolute darkness of a subterranean environment. The constant temperature inside the cave is around 4°C year-round — a welcome relief on a hot summer day and a reminder of the geothermal forces shaping the peninsula.

Vatnshellir is located on Route 574 near the tip of Snæfellsnes, within the national park. Tours are run by a licensed operator and must be pre-booked, especially in peak summer. Helmets and torches are provided. The cave entrance and car park are accessible by regular car year-round. A small fee applies for the guided tour.
