Making our way through the rural countryside of East Iceland, we travel along the beautiful valley of Jökuldalur and stop at the picturesque Rjúkandi Waterfall before continuing towards Stuðlagil Canyon.

At Stuðlagil, we visit the west side of the canyon, where accessible walking trails and scenic viewing platforms offer spectacular panoramic views over one of Iceland’s most impressive basalt rock formations. From this side, you’ll enjoy breathtaking perspectives of the dramatic columns and the glacial river below — perfect for photography and experiencing the scale of the canyon.

Please note that this tour does not include the hike down into the canyon on the east side.

After taking in the stunning landscapes, we continue to the ever-relaxing Vök Baths, where you can soak in naturally heated geothermal pools floating on Lake Urriðavatn. The warm, mineral-rich waters provide the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

This day tour offers a wonderful blend of scenic nature, light walking, and geothermal relaxation — an unforgettable East Iceland experience.

We will start the tour by driving to Rjúkandi Waterfall in Jökuldalur Valley, where we’ll make a short stop and take an easy and accessible walk up to the waterfall. From there we will make our way to Stuðlagil Canyon.

  • Stuðlagil Canyon

Nestled deep within the remote Icelandic countryside, Stuðlagil Canyon is truly a remarkable destination. On this tour, we visit the west side of the canyon, where scenic walking paths and viewing platforms offer sweeping panoramic views over the dramatic basalt columns and the river below.

Reaching the main viewpoints involves a short walk from the parking area, including uphill and downhill sections as well as a fairly long staircase leading down toward the canyon overlook. The total time spent at Stuðlagil Canyon is approximately 1 hour, giving you ample time to take in the views, explore the platforms and trails.

Most of the summer the water in the river is clear with turquoise colour but in the beginning of August the river changes to grey-ish glacial water.

  • Vök Baths

After enjoying everything Stuðlagil Canyon has to offer we head to the geothermal oasis of Vök Baths. Vök offers Iceland’s first floating pools in Urriðavatn Lake, a large pool with it’s own bar, steam bath, cold mist tunnel, quality guest facilities, and restaurant Vök Bistro with a view of the lake and the pools with a menu based on sustainability and local ingredients.

  • A 100% charge applies if canceled within 1 days of the start time.
  • Free cancellation up to 1000 days before the start time.

Please note

The visit to Stuðlagil Canyon on this tour takes place on the west side of the canyon, where well-maintained walking paths and viewing platforms provide beautiful panoramic views. The walk from the parking area to the viewpoints is relatively short and mostly on gravel paths.

Please note that reaching the main viewing platforms includes both uphill and downhill sections, as well as a fairly long staircase leading down toward the canyon viewpoint. Travelers should therefore be comfortable walking on uneven surfaces and using stairs.

This tour does not include the 5 km hike to the canyon floor on the east side.

There are no meal options available along the route, so we recommend bringing a packed lunch or snacks for the day.

The weather in Iceland can change quickly, so please dress appropriately to stay comfortable throughout the tour.

Recommended items include:

  • Sturdy walking shoes
  • Windproof and waterproof clothing
  • A small backpack
  • Water bottle
