Iceland's best-known route runs east. This tour goes west – through a stretch of the country that rewards curiosity with some of its most extraordinary natural and historical experiences. The Silver Circle is West Iceland's answer to the beaten track, and this private full-day tour follows it in full.
The route heads west from Reykjavík into the Borgarfjörður region, arriving first at Reykholt – one of Iceland's most historically significant sites. This quiet village was home to Snorri Sturluson, the 13th-century chieftain and scholar whose writings on Norse mythology and Viking history remain essential reading eight centuries later. His ancient geothermal bathing pool still stands in the village, and the Snorrastofa cultural centre tells his story in full.
From Reykholt, the tour continues to the adjoining wonders of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Hraunfossar sees water seep in long, delicate ribbons from beneath an ancient lava field, flowing into the river below along a 900-metre stretch of extraordinary natural beauty. Barnafoss, immediately alongside, is a churning torrent of white water driving through a narrow canyon – as dramatic and forceful as Hraunfossar is delicate.
The day's centrepiece is the Into the Glacier experience at Langjökull – a purpose-built tunnel system carved deep inside Iceland's second-largest glacier. Guided by specialist staff, the experience leads through chambers and passages inside the ice, offering a perspective on one of Iceland's great natural features that almost no one else gets to see.
On the return, Fossatun offers a quieter moment beside a natural waterfall in the West Iceland countryside. The day ends at Hvammsvik Hot Springs on the shores of Hvalfjörður fjord – eight natural pools set at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, named one of the Best Things to Do in the World by Time Out in 2023. In any season, it is a remarkable place to close a day.
Please note: the entrance fees for the Into the Glacier experience and Hvammsvik Hot Springs are not included in the initial price but can be added at the checkout page.
Your day begins in Reykjavik with a comfortable pickup from your hotel or selected location. You meet your friendly guide who will be with you throughout the journey. As you settle into the vehicle, you can relax and get ready for the experience ahead. Soon, the city streets start to disappear as you head toward the countryside. A full day of adventure, nature, and relaxation is about to begin.
As you travel into West Iceland, the landscape begins to open up around you. You will see wide lava fields, flowing rivers, and distant mountains in every direction. The peaceful scenery makes the drive enjoyable and relaxing. Your guide will share simple and interesting stories about Iceland’s nature, people, and history. This part of the journey helps you connect with the land before reaching the main stops.
Your first stop is Reykholt, a small village with great importance in Icelandic history. This was once the home of Snorri Sturluson, a famous writer and historian. He helped preserve many stories about Norse gods and Viking life. You can see the remains of his old geothermal bath, which is still visible today. The calm surroundings make it easy to imagine how life once was here.
Next, you visit two unique waterfalls located close to each other. Hraunfossar is calm and beautiful, with clear water flowing gently out from under a lava field. It creates many small streams that stretch along the river. Just a short walk away is Barnafoss, which is very different. Here, strong glacial water rushes quickly through a narrow rocky channel, creating a powerful and dramatic scene.
The journey continues to the Husafell area, where your glacier adventure begins. You board a specially modified vehicle designed to drive on ice and snow. As you reach Langjokull glacier, you step into a world of ice. Inside the glacier, you walk through a man made tunnel surrounded by blue ice walls. It is a rare and unforgettable experience where you learn how glaciers form and change over time.
After the glacier, you stop at Fossatun, a peaceful area known for its waterfalls and local stories. Water flows gently over dark volcanic rocks, creating a calm and scenic setting. This place is also linked to Icelandic folklore. According to legend, a troll lives here and protects the area. You can explore small paths and enjoy the mix of nature and storytelling.
Later in the day, you arrive at Hvammsvik hot springs, located right by the ocean. This is one of the most relaxing parts of the tour. Warm natural pools are built along the shoreline, blending with the sea and changing with the tides. Surrounded by mountains and fresh air. The entrance fee is not added in initial price but can be added at check-out page.
After your time at the hot springs, you begin your journey back to Reykjavik. The drive follows a scenic coastal road along the fjord. The calm water, quiet surroundings, and soft evening light make the return journey very peaceful. It is a great time to relax and reflect on the experiences of the day.
You arrive back in Reykjavik in the evening after a full day of exploring. Your guide drops you off at your hotel or chosen location. By the end of the tour, you will have seen waterfalls, glaciers, historic sites, and natural hot springs. It is a complete Iceland experience in one unforgettable day.
