Starting from the Arctic Adventures Hut in Skaftafell, you'll board our 4×4 bus for a scenic drive to the glacier's edge. You'll cross Falljökull, the "Falling Glacier," to reach the hidden Virkisjökull, the secluded "Fortress Glacier" where most of the hike unfolds. Far from the standard glacier routes, you'll walk through a quiet world of towering ice formations, dramatic icefalls, and striking basalt columns. This is a glacier almost to yourself!
Built for travelers ready to go beyond the beaten path, this is the wilder, more secluded alternative to a standard glacier hike.

Please meet us at the Arctic Adventures hut in Skaftafell National Park, just down the path from the Skaftafell Visitor Centre. Here, you'll meet your certified glacier guide and begin the tour with a safety briefing and a full gear fitting: crampons, harness, helmet, and ice axe.
Guests can park in the Skaftafell Visitor Parking Lot – a short walk from our hut.
Rental gear including hiking boots, waterproof pants, and waterproof jackets is available at our hut.
Once everyone’s set, you’ll board our 4×4 bus for a scenic 25-minute drive to the glacier’s edge, getting you closer to Falljökull than the main walking trail allows and saving your energy for the ice ahead!
Next, you’ll step onto Falljökull, the “Falling Glacier,” and your guide will lead you across its lower ice, teaching you how to read the surface and move safely between crevasses. After crossing Falljökull, you’ll continue onto Virkisjökull, the hidden “Fortress Glacier” where most of the hike takes place. This is the quiet, secluded part of the tour: roughly 3.5-4 hours walking through a glacier valley framed by dramatic icefalls, towering ice formations, and striking basalt columns, with views opening up to Öræfajökull, Iceland’s highest peak. Toward the end, you’ll retrace the route back across Falljökull to the glacier edge, where the 4×4 bus will be waiting.
The drive back to Skaftafell takes another 25 minutes, returning you to the Arctic Adventures hut about 5.5 hours after you set out.
This is an extended hike on a moderately challenging route. Guests should be comfortable on their feet for 3.5-4 hours and prepared to hike ~10-12km over a 300m elevation gain on uneven terrain. Previous glacier experience is not required, but a good level of general fitness is.
Our glacier crampons are not available for shoe sizes below 35 EU, as they cannot be securely attached to smaller footwear. Guests with a smaller shoe size than this are unfortunately unable to participate.
If the tour is booked for a minor, an adult must accompany them during both the transfer and the tour. Safety and supervision are essential when planning the tour for young participants.
