A wild, seldom-visited lava gorge through which the milky-white glacial Hvítá river carves its way in the remote West Highlands.

Hvítárgjá is a rugged canyon section of the Hvítá river in the West Highlands, where the glacially fed river cuts through an ancient lava plateau in a series of turbulent rapids and minor waterfalls. The name means simply “White River Canyon,” referring to the characteristic milky-grey colour of the glacial meltwater.

The canyon is raw and undeveloped — there are no signs, no boardwalks, and few other visitors. For travellers comfortable in highland terrain, the gorge offers a rare chance to experience an Icelandic river canyon in its entirely unmodified state. The birdlife along the river, including harlequin ducks and arctic terns, adds to the experience.

Access is via highland roads in the Kaldidalur or Kerlingarfjöll areas; exact approach tracks vary and a 4×4 is necessary. This is a summer-only site. Best suited for experienced wilderness travellers who carry a detailed map.
