A narrow, cathedral-like canyon in Þórsmörk with a secret waterfall at its end — one of Iceland's most enchanting slot canyon hikes.

Stakkholtsgjá is a magnificent slot canyon in the Þórsmörk wilderness, carved by a small stream through soft volcanic rock over millennia. The gorge walls rise dramatically on both sides, their surfaces draped in vivid green moss and fern, creating a narrow tunnel of greenery that feels entirely otherworldly.

The hike into the canyon follows the stream, requiring some paddling or rock-hopping through shallow water, and culminates at a 30-metre waterfall enclosed by soaring walls. The scale and intimacy of the enclosed space make the final reveal genuinely breathtaking. The canyon is less than 2 km long but takes 2–3 hours to explore properly at a leisurely pace.

Access is via the Þórsmörk area (Routes F249/249). A high-clearance or 4×4 vehicle is required to reach Þórsmörk due to river crossings. Waterproof footwear is essential inside the gorge. Best visited June to September. Part of the broader Þórsmörk / Laugavegur trail network.
