Þórsmörk, the Valley of Thor, is one of Iceland's most spectacular and hardest to reach places: a sheltered green valley of birch woods and braided rivers between three glaciers. The only way in is across unbridged glacial rivers, and this private tour takes you there in a Super Jeep built for exactly that.

Your group gets a dedicated driver-guide and a vehicle that belongs entirely to you for the day. No fixed pace, no waiting for other passengers, no compromises.

The day starts on the South Coast. At Seljalandsfoss you can walk behind the falling water, and a short stroll away Gljúfrabúi hides inside a mossy canyon. Then the road turns to gravel: your Super Jeep leaves the ring road and fords glacial rivers on the F249 track, with a stop at Gígjökull, a glacier tongue reshaped by the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption.

Inside the reserve you walk into Stakkholtsgjá, a narrow canyon with mossy walls about a hundred metres high, and at Básar you have time to explore the valley at your own pace.

Throughout the day your driver-guide shares stories, sagas and practical tips about Iceland's nature, history and culture.

Full details of each stop are in the itinerary. Pick-up and drop-off anywhere in the Capital Area, including the cruise terminals, is included. In the highlands, water levels and weather decide the day, so the river crossings, the stops and their order may change, always with your safety first.

Past the last farms the road becomes the F249 mountain track, with unbridged glacial rivers crossed on the way into the valley.
Gígjökull
An outlet glacier falling from Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano whose 2010 eruption stopped air traffic across Europe.
Stakkholtsgjá
A walk into a narrow, moss-covered canyon that leads to a hidden waterfall.
Básar and Þórsmörk
The valley of Thor, surrounded by glaciers, birch woods and braided rivers. Time for a walk to a viewpoint over the valley.

Please count everyone in your group, including children and infants, as everyone needs their own seat.
We pick up and drop off at any accommodation in the Capital Area and at the cruise terminals in Reykjavík and Hafnarfjörður. Staying somewhere else? Send us a message before you book and we will gladly help.
Arriving by cruise ship? This is a long day, so please check your ship's all-aboard time before you book. We plan the start time and the route around it, so you are back at the port well before all-aboard time.
This is a full day of about 10 hours door to door.

Season and weather

This tour runs from mid-June to the end of September, while the F249 track to Þórsmörk is open.
Weather and road conditions decide the day. Stops may change or be skipped, and on rare days the highland roads close completely. If the tour cannot run, we move it to another date or give you a full refund.
Food options on the way are very limited, so please bring a packed lunch and snacks.

Walking and accessibility

The Super Jeep sits high, so you should be able to climb in and out on your own. The walk into Stakkholtsgjá follows a stream over loose stones, so waterproof shoes help.
