A striking modernist church overlooking the harbour of Stykkishólmur is an architectural gem by Jón Hnífsdalur and a quiet landmark of West Iceland.

Stykkishólmskirkja is the parish church of Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, completed in 1990 to a design by architect Jón Hnífsdalur. The building stands on a hill above the town’s colourful harbour, its white-rendered walls and distinctive stepped tower visible from the ferry terminal and from across the bay.

The interior is light, calm, and simply furnished, following a modern Scandinavian tradition of Lutheran plainness. Large windows frame views of the fjord and the islands of Breiðafjörður. The church is the spiritual heart of a town that rewards leisurely exploration, with its painted wooden houses, the Norwegian House museum, and the harbour from which the Baldur ferry departs for the Westfjords.

Stykkishólmskirkja is open to visitors daily in summer and during services year-round. Entry is free. It is a short walk uphill from the town centre and well worth the climb for the views alone.
