Snaefellsjökull, one of Iceland's most recognizable landmarks, is located there. It stands at an impressive 1446 meters high and is topped by a glacier (the Icelandic word for "glacier," jökull).
On clear days, the volcano is visible from Reykjavik, a distance of around 120 kilometers. The peak is also recognized as the setting of Jules Verne's novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. The area surrounding Snaefellsjökull has been declared by the Icelandic government as one of the country's four National Parks.
