Skaftafellsjökull is the glacier tongue flowing directly adjacent to the Skaftafell visitor centre in Vatnajökull National Park. An easy 30-minute walk from the car park brings you to the glacier front, where you can stand at the ice margin and look up at a broad, grey-white expanse of moving ice flanked by dark moraine ridges.
This glacier is ideal for those who want an up-close encounter with Vatnajökull ice without a guided tour — the trail is well-marked and the glacier terminus is stable enough to observe safely from the moraine edge. Guided hikes onto the ice surface are also available for those wanting to get further in among the crevasses and blue-ice corridors.
Located just off the Ring Road (Route 1) roughly 330 km east of Reykjavík. The Skaftafell visitor centre offers maps, café, and facilities. Accessible year-round by regular 2WD car. Park rangers recommend staying off the glacier ice itself without a certified guide.
