A free natural geothermal pool beside the ocean in the Westfjords, perched at the edge of Vatnsfjörður nature reserve with fjord views in every direction.

Hellulaug is a small natural hot spring pool on the southern shore of Vatnsfjörður in the Westfjords, just off Route 60 near the Flókalundur hotel. The pool is carved into the rocky shoreline and holds geothermal water at around 38°C year-round, with the open fjord on one side and the mountains of the Vatnsfjörður Nature Reserve behind.

Unlike Iceland’s built lagoon spas, Hellulaug is entirely natural with no changing facilities, café, or fencing — just a shallow rock-rimmed pool that any passing traveller can step into. This simplicity is the point. The fjord views and the silence of the Westfjords interior make it a genuinely restorative stop on Route 60.

The pool is freely accessible 24 hours a day. There are no toilet facilities on site; the nearest are at Flókalundur Hotel, 1–2 km away. Visitors should bring swimwear, a towel, and be aware that the water can run hot — pouring seawater in to cool it down is acceptable practice.
