The South Coast of Iceland: Waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes and black sand beaches

Our Tour to the South Coast of Iceland

This tour takes you to an amazingly beautiful area that is filled with contrasts. First of all, with volcanoes hidden under glaciers, and traces of their past activity visible everywhere, you will understand why Iceland is nicknamed "The Land of Fire and Ice".

But the contrast can also be seen in the colors of the Costa Sur. The Whiteness of the glaciers is striking as it meets the blackness of the volcanic sands and ashes, with Sölheimajökull being the best example of it. The other colors on this black canvas come from the green moss and the blue ocean.

We will visit the beautiful waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss y Skógafoss as well as the black sand beach Reynisfjara. Our Costa Sur tour is definitely one of the must-see tours in Iceland and we will do our best to make sure you will get to experience the best sights that the Costa Sur has to offer.

One would think that coming to Iceland in the winter or in the summer requires bringing completely different outfits.

Esto es cierto y falso. Digamos que es muy poco probable que haga calor en invierno y que haga mucho frío en verano.

This said: Always, always be ready for rain and wind. The weather is highly unpredictable in Iceland and is famous for turning from an one extreme to another in an instant.

¿Qué significa?

It means that no matter how many layers you are wearing in regards to the temperature, you should always have a windproof/rainproof jacket and pair of pants, either on you or at least with you in your backpack.

  • Seljalandsfoss

Nuestro Costa Sur tour includes visiting the amazing waterfall of Seljalandsfoss.  The waterfall is approximately 60m high (200 feet), and the water flows from the closest glacier: Eyjafjallajökull. This waterfall, just as the next one we will visit today, is among the 5 most famous and most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. It also has a very special feature, making it unique. There is a giant cave just behind the waterfall, allowing you to walk behind and around the waterfall*. A truly wonderful experience.

Definitely a must-see on the Costa Sur of Iceland!

*Please note that sometimes in winter, the path behind the waterfall can be closed for safety reasons.

  • Skógafoss

Our tour also includes stopping by another stunning waterfall: Skógafoss.  Just as high as the other one we visit today: Seljalandsfoss, but so much more powerful.

Legend says that there is a treasure hidden behind the waterfall, and that once, someone managed to touch it. But, in doing so, they just pushed the treasure further away and nobody has ever been able to reach to it since.

It could be a legend, it could be true, in any case, we would not recommend you to try and get behind this waterfall to find out!

  • The black Sand Beach of Reynisfjara

Most of the beaches in Iceland are made out of black sand, due to the volcanic activity on the island. But this one is usually referred to as THE black sand beach.

And this is probably because it is absolutely the most beautiful of them all. We would even go as far as claiming it to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Basaltic columns, caves, impressive (and very dangerous) waves, unusual rock formations, abrupt cliffs, and abundant birdlife in summer, including frailecillos, are what is making Reynisfjara Beach so very special.

Also, if you are a fan of Juego de Tronos, this is the beach where the Dragon Glass Cave was filmed.

  • The glacier of Sólheimajökull

Sölheimajökull is a glacier outlet of a much bigger glacier: Mýrdalsjökull.

Sölheimajökull (or Sólo as we call it in Iceland) is partly covered with volcanic ashes, making it very distinctive compared to many other glaciers. Shades of white and blue ice are strongly contrasting with the darkness of the ashes.

Although we offer another tour that includes a proper glacier hike en Sölheimajökull, esto Costa Sur tour does take you on a 10-15 minute walk to a viewpoint giving you the best panoramic view of the glacier.

  • And more …

The other parts of the itinerary that were mentioned: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara y Sölheimajökull will not be the only places you will discover and visit during our Costa Sur gira.
