A strikingly accessible glacier tongue flowing from Vatnajökull into a proglacial lake, framed by crevasses and moraine ridges near Skaftafell.

Svínafellsjökull is a spectacular outlet glacier of the Vatnajökull ice cap that terminates in a small proglacial lake within easy walking distance of the Skaftafell visitor area. Its heavily crevassed surface, towering seracs, and vivid blue ice make it one of the most visually compelling and accessible glacier tongues in Iceland.

A well-maintained trail from the Skaftafell car park leads to an excellent viewpoint overlooking the glacier terminus and lake in about 20 minutes. Guided glacier walks and ice climbing trips depart from this location, allowing visitors to get onto the ice safely. The glacier has retreated noticeably in recent decades, but remains a stunning spectacle.

Svínafellsjökull is located within Vatnajökull National Park just off the Ring Road between Kirkjubæjarklaustur and Höfn. The access road and viewpoint trail are open year-round, accessible by regular car. Guided glacier experiences are best booked in advance, particularly in summer.
