Skógar Museum

Skógar Museum (Skógasafn) is one of Iceland’s most comprehensive open-air and indoor folk museums, founded in 1949 by the legendary local collector Þórður Tómasson. Located right beside Skógafoss waterfall at the southern foot of the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, it has grown into a sprawling complex with an indoor exhibition hall and a village of reconstructed historic buildings.

The collection spans an astonishing range: fishing boats, a turf church, an old farmstead, a schoolhouse, a smithy, and tens of thousands of domestic and agricultural artefacts. It offers one of the most accessible introductions to traditional Icelandic life available anywhere in the country.

The museum is open year-round, with longer hours in summer. It lies directly on Route 1 at Skógar, making it an effortless stop on any South Coast itinerary. Parking is free and the waterfall is just steps away. Allow two to three hours.
