One of Iceland's best-preserved nineteenth-century turf farm complexes offers a remarkable window into traditional rural life on the edge of the Arctic.

Glaumbær is an exceptional group of turf-roofed farmhouses in Skagafjörður, dating mainly from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, though the site has been inhabited since the Viking Age. The complex of interconnected rooms — each with its own function — illustrates how Icelanders insulated themselves against the bitter winters using nothing but grass sod, timber, and ingenuity.

Operated by the Skagafjörður Heritage Museum, Glaumbær contains original furnishings, tools, and household objects that bring daily farm life vividly to life. A pleasant timber farmhouse from 1876 adjacent to the turf complex serves as a café and gift shop during the summer season.

Glaumbær is on Route 75 about five kilometres north of Varmahlíð, easily combined with a stop in Sauðárkrókur. It is open from May to September (check official site for exact dates); the exterior grounds can be visited year-round free of charge.
