A green hamlet between glaciers and sands, a key stop en route to Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur, usually shortened to Klaustur, is a tiny green oasis between glaciers, rivers and vast sand plains on the south-east stretch of the Ring Road. Once home to a medieval convent, it has a quiet, storied atmosphere.

Nearby are the Systrafoss waterfall, the curious basalt ‘church floor’ of Kirkjugólf, and the extraordinary Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon. In summer it’s the gateway to the remote Laki craters, and it makes a handy stop between Vík and Vatnajökull.
