Stuðlagil Canyon
The Hidden Canyon
No no, this is not a Game of Thrones episode. This is real. This is Stuðlagil Canyon in the east of Iceland. Social media and hashtags have made it easier for people to look for beautiful places when traveling, and this is how Stuðlagil has been discovered. If you have heard of the Basalt Column Canyon, well, this is it.
You might recall Svartifoss Waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park when seeing the canyon. The basalt or lava columns you observe in the Jökuldalur valley were the result of volcanic lava. To get to the canyon you have to walk around 5 miles at least, but it is one of the most incredible things in Iceland, and not everyone knows about this. The turquoise color in the water is the result of the power plant built that ended up creating a reservoir on the Jökulsá á Brú river.
We don’t offer any tours to Stuðlagil Canyon, but just do it yourself and share your experience with us on Instagram and Facebook!
