A narrow slot canyon hidden in the lava fields below Eyjafjallajökull, where a waterfall and rope-assisted scramble reward adventurous visitors.

Nauthúsagil (“Cowshed Ravine”) is a tight, moss-walled gorge carved into the lava below Eyjafjallajökull, easily missed from the road but a genuine adventure to explore. A small stream and a short waterfall fill the interior, and the canyon is so narrow in places that visitors must wade through the stream or edge along submerged ledges.

The experience is a highlight of the South Coast for those who seek something beyond the standard waterfall viewpoints: the mossy green walls close in overhead, the sound of water echoes off the rock, and a fixed rope assists passage over the trickiest section. The entire route takes 45–60 minutes and involves getting wet feet.

The trailhead is accessed off a farm track near Þórsmörk Road (Route 249). The parking area is small and the gorge is best visited outside of peak summer weekends for the most immersive experience. Waterproof footwear or wellies are strongly recommended.
