HIKE IN THORSMORK NATURE RESERVE

Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) Nature Reserve is among Iceland’s most stunning landscapes, celebrated for its striking mountains, glacier vistas, hidden waterfalls, dramatic canyons, and serene birch forests. To us locals, it holds a special place—an ideal setting for hiking, connecting with nature, and soaking in the unique energy of a valley nestled between three glaciers.

This tour is perfect for those looking to explore less-traveled trails with a local guide. At Midgard, we embrace the concept of slow travel, believing that the most memorable adventures are personal. Your guide will lead you to their cherished spots, share captivating sagas and stories, and reveal what makes Þórsmörk so meaningful to Icelanders.

Every hike is customized to match the day’s conditions, ensuring a unique experience on every tour. The routes range from 6 to 12 kilometers, with 3 to 4 hours of hiking. Elevation gains vary between 350 and 800 meters.

Here are some of the hikes we may take:

  • Tindfjallahringur hike: An 8–12 km loop showcasing wilderness at its finest. This trail takes you through lush valleys, birch woodlands, and ridgelines, offering breathtaking views of the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. It’s a journey through Þórsmörk’s peaceful yet dramatic terrain, providing an authentic Icelandic nature experience.
  • Hvannárgil hike: A 6–8 km loop that winds through a narrow canyon, tracing riverbeds and climbing ridges for expansive views of Þórsmörk’s valleys, glaciers, and birch forests. This hike is ideal for adventurers eager to uncover the raw beauty and solitude of Þórsmörk’s hidden corners.
  • Hestagötur hike: A 9 km trail meandering through birch forests, ridges, and rocky paths, offering close-up views of valleys and glaciers like Mýrdalsjökull. Following old sheep trails, this hike is a perfect way to immerse yourself in Þórsmörk’s quiet and scenic treasures.
