Enjoy the beauty of the nature in East Iceland, see the stunning Stuðlagil canyon, and learn about Icelandic culture, nature, and history.

In the last few years, Stuðlagil has become the most popular site in East Iceland due to the magnificent basalt columns surrounding it. What was once a hidden site, known only to the locals, was revealed in all its beauty after the large hydroelectric dam at Kárahnjúkar was built and blocked the glacier river from entering the canyon for most of the year.

Please note that the river takes on a grey-brown colour during overflow of the hydroelectric dam. This is most common from the beginning of August til October, but can occur at other times as well.

    • We set off from the port in Seyðisfjörður and head over the mountain towards the town of Egilsstaðir. We drive through the scenic landscapes of East Iceland, taking in its beauty.
    • On our way towards Stuðlagil Canyon, we drive through the valley of Jökuldalur, stopping at the stunning Rjúkandi waterfall.
    • From there, we head further into Jökuldalur, where we take a hike to Stuðlagil canyon. The hike is 2,5 km each way on an easy footpath reaching the place where you can climb down into the canyon. The climb down requires some agility, but the canyon can also be enjoyed from above.
