Stuðlagil - The gem of East Iceland
Enjoy the beauty of the nature in East Iceland, see the stunning Stuðlagil canyon, and learn about Icelandic culture, nature, and history.
In the last few years, Stuðlagil has become the most popular site in East Iceland due to the magnificent basalt columns surrounding it. What was once a hidden site, known only to the locals, was revealed in all its beauty after the large hydroelectric dam at Kárahnjúkar was built and blocked the glacier river from entering the canyon for most of the year.
Please note that the river takes on a grey-brown colour during overflow of the hydroelectric dam. This is most common from the beginning of August til October, but can occur at other times as well.
